Regular price $28,500.00 Sale

Original very rare Dickson, Nelson & Co. Rifle Manufactured in Dawson, GA in 1865 for the State of Alabama and so stamped on the lockplate. Alabama contracted with Dickson, Nelson & Co. for 5,000 weapons based on the U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle but only 645 were delivered. The rifle is considered to be one of the better made Confederate Rifles and very much sought after by collectors. Organized in 1861 to supply arms to the Confederacy, the factory was going to set up in Dickson, AL but as the tide of the war changed a hasty move was made to Rome, GA. That facility was burned to the ground forcing them to move to Adairsville. They remained there up until the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 at which a retreat with as much machinery as possible was made to Dawson, GA for the remainder of the war.

The rifle is one of 3,500 weapons produced by Dickson, Nelson & Co. and one of 645 for the the State of Alabama. It is a .58 cal percussion rifle and the design is based on the M1841 and M1855 combining features from both. This example is in Museum Quality condition and displays great. The brass buttplate, trigger guard, nosecap and barrel bands have a beautiful untouched aged patina. The wood stock is in great shape with normal wear from service and two small repairs as shown in the pics. The lockplate is marked Dickson, Nelson & Co CS and has ALA 1865 behind the hammer. The mechanics are fully functional with tight action. The barrel is full length and has the rear and front pinch sight intact. Comes complete with the original ramrod.
