Ewell superbly commanded a division in Jackson's small army during the Valley Campaign, personally winning quite a few battles against the larger
U.S. armies. He succeeded Stonewall Jackson as commander of the ANV 2
nd Corps on May 23, 1863. He fought with distinction at First Manassas, the Seven Days, and Second Manassas campaigns, where he lost a leg at at the battle of Groverton. One legged, he ably commanded the 2
nd Corps from Gettysburg to Spotsylvania. He was placed in charge of the Richmond defenses and was captured at Saylor's Creek on April 6, 1865.
